Special to this day was being able to connect with our Tita Tusa Alfafara who was staying in Makati at one of Tere and Manolo’s residences. We met for merienda at the Power Plant Mall, a very upscale mall, unlike Robinson’s Mall which is still very nice in its own right if not massively huge. The Makati Mall, as our driver Ronny said, is in the financial section of Manila. Tried the specialty, bigingka with red egg (duck egg) and white cheese on top. Very rich. Delicious with a n expresso coffee! We also tried halo halo shooters, ginataan, and the other bibingka that is more like a custard.
Filipinos love to eat, no doubt about that. There are restaurant s of all kinds, everywhere: Korean, American, Indian, Chinese, and of course Filipino. Ronny, who incidently is the nephew of Eduardo D’Atangel. (/da/tang/hell), was hired to drive us around while we’re in Manila. While Oscar tended to some family business, Ronny took us to Rizal Park, Intramuros and to Dencero’s, a popular Filipino restaurant, kind of like …… Mimi’s Café for its wide variety…. Filipino style. We ordered fried chicken, tilapia, pinakbet, adobo kangkong (onchoy vegetables in a light sauce – yummy).
Before the lunch, it had started to rain heavily. Thunder clapped and more rain came down. We had been thinking of doing the water boat tour on Oscar’s suggestion, but with the weather change, ducked into the huge artisan store (four floors!) filled with goods ranging from books to textiles to purses, to furniture. We split up and agreed to meet at the cashier desk in an hour. Ronny left and returned for us and that’s when he took us for lunch.
